Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year Award
Created in 1986, the Georgia Athletic Trainer Association (GATA) is an organization committed to education of its members and enhancement of the profession of athletic training, leading to better healthcare for the population which it serves. The GATA is proudly composed of licensed athletic trainers in many different settings. Over 700 licensed athletic trainers from professional, collegiate, and high school teams to industrial programs and rehabilitation clinics all work together to promote and practice the profession of athletic training within the state of Georgia. Since 2001 GATA has awarded the Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year Award. To be nominated the recipient must have practiced medicine in Georgia at least five years. In addition the recipient must have worked alongside a certified athletic trainer providing care to Georgia’s athletes. Dr Wilkes, who received the award in January 2007, has served as the team physician for Clayton State College and University for the past 15 years and for Woodward Academy for the past 20 years.

Evita Rogers, one of Georgia State’s top female basketball stars recently had her jersey retired. Evita leads the top scoring position in girls basketball for Georgia State. Here she is pictured with Dr. Wilkes, her physician, who has played a major role in keeping her on top of her game. Way to go, Evita!

2006 Alzheimer’s Memory Walk
Southern Orthopaedic Specialists staff and family members, participated in the 2006 Alzheimer’s Memory Walk and raised over $600.
2006 Cox MS 150 Atlanta Challenge
Dr. Peter Symbas and Herschel Walker ride in the MS Bike Tour. The 2006 Cox MS 150 Atlanta Challenge helps to raise money for the National MS Society - Georgia Chapter.
Tour de Cure
On Sunday May 16th Dr. Christopher Jarrett and Katy Self from our Piedmont Office participated in the Tour de Cure bike ride benefiting the American Diabetes Association.
As part of Team Ortho Piedmont Dr. Jarrett and Katy rode 31 miles and raised just over $3000 to fund diabetes research, education and advocacy programs.
Way to go Katy and Dr. Jarrett! We are proud of you!!
